Nuchal Translucency Scan is the full form of NT Scan. The NT Scan is one of the screening tests done during pregnancy to detect any abnormality in the baby. It examines the size of the nuchal translucency which is a clear tissue present at the back of the baby's neck. If there are too much of clear tissue then it indicates the the baby may have down syndrome, edwards syndrome, trisomy 13 or other chromosomal abnormalities. The baby may also develop other medical conditions such as low muscle tone, abnormal height, etc. The NT scan is usually done in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Normally the NT Scan do not require any special preparation. You can have your normal diet and carry on regular activities prior to the scan.
Generally the process involves two steps. First a blood test will be done to measure the level of PAPP-A and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG). Then the blood test will be followed by a special ultrasound will be used to examine the nasal bone and the fluid present at the back neck of the baby. You will be asked to lie down on a table exposing your stomach. A gel will be applied on the skin of your stomach to avoid any friction when a transducer is rubbed against the skin. Usually it takes around 20 minutes to complete the whole procedure.
The combined results of both the blood test and NT scan helps to detect chromosomal abnormality in the fetus. If the test results shows any abnormality then it means that there are increased risks of having birth defects in the baby. This is just a screening test. The test results of NT scan cannot be used to diagnose birth defects. Your doctor may also ask you to take other pregnancy tests such as triple marker test, double marker test, quadruple marker test, etc at different stages of your pregnancy.
